When the call for assistance came from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and news of the total loss of the Knott County Senior Center in Eastern Kentucky, the Denbigh Crafters immediately began production of baby blankets, scarves, hats, and shawls. In total, 72 items were sent to help aid those affected by the flood.
A part of Newport News Parks & Recreation Active Lifestyles Program, the Denbigh Crafters is a knitting and crochet group that meets at Courthouse Way Community Center; with a mission to make handmade items for communities in need. Their past local donations include baby items to Healthy Families, chemotherapy caps to Riverside Infusion Center, and blankets to Menchville House. The Crafters also donate hats and blankets to the Mattaponi Native American reservation as well as hats, mittens, blankets, and sweaters to coal miners’ children in Big Stone Gap, Va.
The Denbigh Crafters have been donating items for over 20 years and have an active membership of 15 members. The group meets on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until noon. If you would like more information, please contact Steve Landers at 757-886-7929 or email landerssw@nnva.gov.
