Public Encouraged to Attend
The Newport News Police Department, Newport News Fire Department, and the Newport News Sheriff’s Office have planned a special ceremony to honor, remember, and pay tribute to the over 3,000 people who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, including more than 400 first responders, and those who suffer from illnesses resulting from those attacks.
The ceremony will be held tomorrow Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. in front of Newport News City Hall, 2400 Washington Avenue.
The keynote speaker is Captain Jessica Baboulis. She currently oversees the United States Capitol Police, Capitol Division. Captain Baboulis was very close to the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, and the attacks had a devastating effect on her and the people in her hometown. She will share her story at the ceremony.
The ceremony will begin with the posting of colors, followed by the reading of a proclamation by Mayor McKinley Price, the placing of wreaths for the victims at all three sites, and the rendering of honors.
