Press release submitted by Phillip Jones campaign…It is printed in it’s entirety.
Last Tuesday, Phillip Jones formally announced his candidacy for Mayor of the city of Newport News. Phillip’s victory in this election would make him the youngest African American mayor in the city’s history.

Phillip Jones released the following statement regarding his candidacy:
“I am running for Mayor because we are at a critical time in our city. The direction the next Mayor leads us will build a foundation for our city’s legacy for years to come. We must come together to reach our full potential. We need a leader with new ideas and a fresh perspective to move our city boldly forward.
I have spent my entire career bringing people together and building coalitions. My lived experiences have uniquely prepared me for this moment. I graduated from the United States Naval Academy, leading young midshipmen and serving as the first black Brigade Sergeant Major. As a Marine Corps Officer, I have led fellow Marines on peacekeeping missions in Asia, Europe, and Africa. While attending Harvard Business and Harvard Kennedy School, I focused my efforts on public-private partnerships, a space that will drive future innovation and collaboration. As an associate at an international consulting firm, I partnered directly with senior executives, mayors, and nonprofits to structure ambiguous problems and take action to solve them.
I have a clear vision for how to move Newport News forward: We must ensure all our schools are fully accredited — regardless of zip code, leverage cross-sector collaboration to build up our tax base, modernize city hall processes, and elevate the narrative of our city on a national level to compete globally.
I am determined to make this city a place everyone can be proud to call home, and I’m ready to be the leader Newport News needs.”
