As of today, January 7th, there are three current members of the Newport News City Council who have announced or have stated they will declare their candidacy for the office of Mayor of the City of Newport News since the current mayor, Dr. McKinely Price has announced he is not seeking a 4th term.
Councilwoman Tina Vick, representing the South District 3, Seat A, announced her candidacy on December 2nd. Ms. Vick stated her goal is to continue to be ‘committed to making a difference’ and plans to support economic development efforts, vibrant neighborhoods, assist with schools, and more. Councilwoman Dr. Saundra Cherry, also representing the South District 3, Seat B, announced her candidacy on January 1st. Dr. Cherry stated that one of her goals as Mayor would be critical investments for economic growth and development city-wide.

According to Councilman David Jenkins social media, he will be formally announcing his candidacy for Newport News Mayor on January 22nd. Councilman Jenkins represents Central District 2, Seat B. Mr. Jenkins stated that his focus would be to make Newport News the best city in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

None of these candidates are certified yet, but we will keep you informed once other candidates have declared or more information about the campaigns is made available.
Filing deadline for primary candidates is April 7th at 5pm; non-primary candidates, June 21st at 7pm.
