In yesterday’s newsletter, we excitedly shared details on the Ferguson NlightN Holiday Event Series. Beginning Thanksgiving Day and extending through New Year’s Day, the City of Newport News lights up with three main events – the classic Celebration in Lights at Newport News Park, the magical Lights at the Fountain at City Center, and the art and technology focused ARTech Lights at Brooks Crossing. But that’s not all! Additional events are hosted throughout the city to help residents of all ages celebrate during this special season, including the ones below.
Rejoice in the spirit of the season on Styron Square in Port Warwick during their Holiday Tree Lighting this Saturday, November 27 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public and begins with a Santa Parade followed by Santa lighting the majestic tree. Enjoy live entertainment by Santa Brass, Doorway Singers, the Commodore Chorus and Dance Works. Kids activities include a “Night Before Christmas” puppet show by Rainbow Productions, face painting, balloon creations and more. For those looking for a quieter way to take in the lights, cozy up with your loved one and enjoy a carriage ride. Virginia Health Services and Styron Square Apartments are providing free cider, hot chocolate and cookies (while supplies last). Food trucks will also be on site selling a variety of meals and treats. For more information, visit the Port Warwick Holiday Tree Lighting website.
Another Newport News classic holiday tradition, the Wreathing of the Lions, takes place on Saturday, December 4 from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. This community focused event, sponsored by The Mariners’ Museum and their Bronze Door Society, includes a bonfire, holiday music, games, crafts, cookies, hot chocolate, hot apple cider and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Don’t miss this fun celebration at Lions Bridge on Museum Drive. For more information, visit The Mariners Museum website.
To help residents ages 50 and over get in the holiday spirit, the Newport News Active Lifestyles Program is hosting a Jingle-Jingle Drive Thru on Wednesday, December 8 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Brittingham-Midtown Community Center (570 McLawhorne Drive). This free event includes entertainment, gifts and much more. RSVP by Wednesday, December 1 to Angelica at 757-591-4853 or at any of the city’s Active Lifestyles Centers.
Enjoy an old fashioned holiday during the Historic Hilton Village Gingerbread Celebration, Parade and Merchant Open House on Saturday, December 11. The lighted holiday parade begins at 5 p.m. at Hilton Presbyterian Church at the corner of River Road and Main Street and ends at Merchant District. On the corner of Main Street and Warwick Boulevard, grab your Gingerbread Passport. Visit each location/creation and get a unique passport stamp, while also perusing the unique shops on Main Street. Once you have seen every gingerbread creation and your passport is complete, cast your vote for the best gingerbread creation. The coveted Cocoa Cup will be awarded at 8 p.m. For more information, visit the Hilton Village Events Facebook page.
