The 21st century Library is a community gathering place, technology hub, civic connector, maker space and education center. It is a place for hands-on exploration, equal access, creativity, and cultural learning. Most importantly, the 21st century Library is built around its community and its community’s needs to best serve them. To best serve the Suffolk community, Suffolk Public Library and the design team at Quinn Evans and at Tappé Architects have organized multiple ways for members of the community to provide valuable input in the design of the new Library coming to Downtown Suffolk.
On June 18th, the design team launched a community survey centered around how new Library spaces can better serve the community. People can complete the survey online and also provide ideas by submitting drawings, inspirational photos, and written suggestions by e-mailing libraryemail@suffolkva.us. The online survey can be accessed through the Library’s website at suffolkpubliclibrary.com/NewLibrary. For those who prefer providing feedback through an alternate method, they can call 757-514-7311 and leave a voicemail. The deadline for the community survey is July 15, 2020.
“On behalf of the Library Advisory Board and Library staff, I hope that everyone will take time to share their aspirations and thoughts for how to design the new Library as a place for learning, community engagement, and as a downtown destination,” says Clint S. Rudy, Director of Libraries.
There will two virtual meetings facilitated by the design team at Quinn Evans and at Tappé Architects. The initial community meeting will take place Tuesday, July 7th at 7 p.m., where the community will be introduced to the project scope, timeline, and design team. Attendees will learn about the in-progress feedback from the community survey efforts and get informed about what’s going on with 21st century Libraries. They will also have the opportunity to share their own feedback. The second community meeting will take place Tuesday, July 28th at 7 p.m., and will provide updates on community survey results and polling results from the first meeting as well as the opportunity to share feedback. Both meetings will take place virtually through Zoom, and the meeting link can be found on the Library’s website at suffolkpubliclibrary.com/NewLibrary.
A new Library in Downtown Suffolk will open up many opportunities to provide needed services to those in that area while also drawing others in to learn, work, and play in a state-of-the-art facility. All ideas are welcome, and the Library encourages everyone to dream big when thinking about the possibilities for their new Library.
